My TIME & AGAIN pieces are inspired by a love of old photos and a fascination with the passage of time. The challenge is finding the exact spot from which an old photo was taken and then rephotographing it. The ephemeral B&W image from the past, printed on silk, hangs in front of the present day image on cotton, allowing the viewer to see through the past into the same scene today.
I’ve had a camera in my hands since age 12 when my uncle gave me a Polaroid Swinger. Photography became my passion as I worked my way through two careers, first as a teacher and then in training and marketing for two medical companies. A lay off launched my photography passion into my third career. After photography school I was hired by a pre-press service bureau and became the first woman in Minnesota to set up an all-digital commercial photo studio. For fun, I started restoring my own family photos and in 1996 began a photo restoration and retouching business.
My first show of this work was at the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis in 2003. I have also shown at Concordia College and William Mitchell College of Law, both in St. Paul, MN, and at BNOX Gold & Iron in Pepin, WI.
The desire to do this work comes from my fascination with the passage of time. Just when we realize we are in the present the moment slips into the past and we find ourselves asking, “Where did the time go?” The images of TIME & AGAIN teach us that life is both fleeting and powerful. It’s gone before we can hold it but leaves its mark with a memory. My hope is that these images encourage us to appreciate who and what has gone before and inspire us to think about what memories we will leave for future generations.
